Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker

31jeEonM5tL. SL500

If you are looking for a single very high-quality floor speaker for your TV or stereo system, the Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker is a good option to keep in mind. Considering that there is only one speaker included with this purchase, it’s not exactly cheap. However, you do get what you pay for, and here you do get a high-quality floor speaker.

Review

Something that really stands out about the Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker is its size; it’s not huge, but this means that it is space friendly. It’s advertised as being a speaker which is ideal for small spaces; it certainly is not very large, and it doesn’t take up much space, therefore it’s convenient if you do not have much room to spare.

However, just because it is relatively small in size does not mean that it cannot pump out the volume. This single speaker is a 150 watt speaker, so while it does use up a good deal of power, this power is used to deliver great volume and performance. Keep in mind that you’ll need a compatible receiver or amp to power it, as it is not a powered speaker.

Something else that stands out about the Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker is that it comes with an 8 inch woofer. It can deliver some deep and punchy bass that will fill a whole room. The woofer does a decent job at driving mid-range frequencies, although not amazing.

On that same note, the Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker also comes with a 1 inch soft dome tweeter that can deliver some pretty crisp highs.

You may also like the look of this speaker, as the black and dark grey design of it fits well with most modern décor. Sure, it’s just a square box and it doesn’t have a stand, but at least it looks quite nice; the MDF wood cabinet design looks stylish, plus it’s decently durable.

What’s to like about the Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker

What we like about this Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker is its very simplistic and good-looking design. It’s nothing super high tech or overly fancy, but it does not need to be. It produces great sound quality and the volume it can achieve is impressive too.

What’s not to like about the Cerwin-Vega SL-8 8″ 2-Way Floor Speaker

What’s not great about this speaker is that it doesn’t do the best job at accurately recreating mid-range frequencies, but it could also be worse. Also, when the speaker is played at a very high volume for a long period of time, you may notice some vibrations occurring.

PROS

  • Great bass and highs
  • Durable design
  • Easy setup
  • Space friendly design
  • Loud volume

CONS

  • May begin to vibrate or rattle with prolonged use
  • Mid-range frequency reproduction could be better

Dayton Audio T652 Dual 6-1/2″ 2-Way Tower Speaker Pair

41JkVXNrbFL. SL500

If you are a looking for a pair of speakers to take your stereo or home theater system to the next level, but you don’t want to spend a fortune on speakers, this Dayton Audio T652 Dual 6-1/2″ 2-Way Tower Speaker Pair may be a good option to look into. It comes in at a great price, yet it delivers astounding quality and clarity considering that low price.

Review

This is another one of those speaker systems designed for smaller spaces. No, it’s not a pair of speakers you would use for a concert, but they work rather well for small and relatively enclosed spaces. In terms of size, they measure 7.1 x 9.5 x 30 inches, making them extremely space-friendly, perfect for small living rooms and home theater systems.

Some people may not like how these speakers are just boxes without fancy looking stands, so they are directly on the ground, but the upside here is that they are relatively short, so once again, they don’t take up too much space.

In terms of sound quality, considering the price tag, the Dayton Audio T652 Dual 6-1/2″ 2-Way Tower Speaker Pair is rather impressive. Each speaker features dual 6.5 inch woofers, complete with a ported bass reflex design which means that these speakers can deliver the bass. They’ll make your house shake with bass if you turn the volume up. These woofers also do a fairly good job with the mid-range frequencies, better than we would usually expect at this price.

In terms of tweeters, you get 5/8 inch polycarbonate dome tweeters. They’re made to deliver crisp highs, although admittedly, they could fare better in this department. It’s not like the highs are bad here, but just not great either. In reality, these speakers are all about the bass.

What’s to like about the Dayton Audio T652 Dual 6-1/2″ 2-Way Tower Speaker Pair

For one, we really like these speakers thanks to their slim design that works well with even the smallest of living rooms and home theater rooms. Moreover, if you need speakers to pump out the bass, these might be the best option to consider, especially seeing that the price is more than reasonable.

What’s not to like about the Dayton Audio T652 Dual 6-1/2″ 2-Way Tower Speaker Pair

What we don’t like about this Dayton Audio T652 Dual 6-1/2″ 2-Way Tower Speaker Pair is that it doesn’t do the best job at delivering accurate high-frequency sound reproduction. Moreover, it would appear that they are not overly durable.

PROS

  • Space saving design
  • Very simple setup and operation
  • 2 speakers included
  • Good mid-range sound reproduction
  • Exceptional bass sound

CONS

  • Highs are not great
  • Not overly durable

BIC America Acoustech Platinum Series PL-89 Tower Speaker

41VMWjC4L0L. SL500

This tower speaker from BIC  is so far the most expensive floor standing speaker on the list today, especially considering that it’s just a single speaker. However, as is often the case, you get what you pay for, and here you get a superior quality speaker that’s going to shake the whole house.

Review

Something that stands out is that this speaker can be used for main and/or surround sound channels, something that not too many speakers can do, at least not at this price level. Remember, we did say that this is the most expensive option on our list today, but we have gone for fairly budget-friendly options, and there are definitely far more expensive speakers out there.

Keep in mind that these are video shielded speakers, so they should be able to sit near televisions sets and other electronics without any issue.

What also stands out is how the BIC America Acoustech Platinum Series PL-89 Tower Speaker features 2 big 8 inch woofers with heavy-duty surrounds. This can go as low as 25 Hz, which is impressive. With this kind of low frequency response, you can expect loud, booming, and house-shaking bass.

The mid-range and high frequencies also sound exceptional with this speaker. It comes with a single 6.5 inch high and mid-range frequency aluminum dome horn with neodymium magnets. In terms of the frequency response, it can go up to 23 kHz.

What’s also nice about the BIC Amercia Acoustech Platinum Series PL-89 Tower Speaker is that it has an impedance of 8 ohms, which won’t tax your receiver or amp nearly as much as options with lower impedances.

There’s also the fact that this speaker looks very modern and stylish. It’s rather tall, it has good color contrast with lots of black as well as shiny metal, and it has a slim design which is ideal for smaller rooms. It’s a narrow and space-friendly speaker that looks exceptionally stylish and can fill a room with really loud and high-quality sound.

What’s to like about the BIC America Acoustech Platinum Series PL-89 Tower Speaker

Simply put, this speaker sounds great. Whether we are talking about frequency response or volume, this speaker has it all. It’s loud, it has crisp highs and mid-range tones, and it can really pump the bass. It makes a great addition to a home theater system.

What’s not to like about the BIC America Acoustech Platinum Series PL-89 Tower Speaker

What we don’t like about the BIC Amercia Acoustech Platinum Series PL-89 Tower Speaker, besides the relatively high price of it, is that it doesn’t have a good warranty, which is not great considering how these speakers are not known for their durability.

PROS

  • Very nice looking design
  • Narrow for a space saving design
  • Great bass, highs, and mid-range response
  • Good impedance – doesn’t tax the system much
  • Easy setup

CONS

  • A bit pricey

MartinLogan Motion 40 Gloss White Floorstanding Loudspeaker

31z4aGDgGWL. SL500

Speaking of expensive speakers, this particular model definitely tops the list in terms of its high price. All in all, expect to spend over $700 on this speaker. However, we are big fans of the “you get what you pay for” theory, and here this absolutely holds true. Simply put, this thing is a beast.

Review

First off, the MartinLogan Motion 40 Gloss White Floorstanding Loudspeaker comes with a so-called folded motion tweeter, a 1 inch dome tweeter with over 8 times the overall surface area of your average 1 inch dome tweeter. Also, it features almost 90% less excursion than your typical dome tweeter.

What this means is that this speaker has exceptionally great high and mid-range frequency reproduction. It’s very accurate in sound reproduction; it’s loud, clear, and super crisp, much better than anything else we have looked at so far today.

Speaking of mid-range, you also get a mid-woofer for great mid-range sound reproduction. The MartinLogan Motion 40 Gloss White Floorstanding Loudspeaker also comes with dual oversized cone woofers with a rear-firing bass port. In other words, this speaker can pump the bass like nothing else we have looked at today.

In terms of lows, mid-range, and highs, and overall frequency response, these speakers blow most others out of the water. There is also the fact that this is a speaker with a lot of watts, and you better believe that it’s loud. It can play music and movies at exceptional volumes while maintaining their integrity and sound quality.

Now, this speaker does come in at 12.8 x 7.6 x 42.5 inches, making it the largest floor standing speaker on the list today. It may not be the most space-friendly option, but it’s still not a huge speaker by any means.

The fact that the MartinLogan Motion 40 Gloss White Floorstanding Loudspeaker comes with dual sets of custom 5-way binding posts for bi-wire/bi-amp capabilities is simply awesome. Moreover, the ETC spikes couple to the floor for great bass. You can get this speaker in any of three color options — high gloss white or black, or high gloss cherrywood.

What’s to like about the MartinLogan Motion 40 Gloss White Floorstanding Loudspeaker

What we like about these speakers is their sound. Yes, it sounds odd to say this, but the fact of the matter is that the MartinLogan Motion 40 Gloss White Floorstanding Loudspeaker is undoubtedly the best sounding, the loudest, and the highest quality speaker we have looked at today.

What’s not to like about the MartinLogan Motion 40 Gloss White Floorstanding Loudspeaker

The price, it’s just not great. Yes, it’s a superb speaker, but the price is very high end.

PROS

  • Exceptionally durable
  • Very loud
  • Somewhat space friendly
  • Custom 5 way binding posts
  • Excellent bass, highs, and mid-range performance

CONS

  • Pricey

BUYER’S GUIDE

Let’s quickly take a look at some of the most important purchasing factors you need to take into account when purchasing floor standing speakers.

Size

You want to take a look at the size of the speaker in question. Do you have a small living room or home theater room with not much space to spare, or is space not an issue? Also keep in mind that the size of the speaker is usually directly related to volume and performance.

Durability

You also want to look for a speaker that is highly rated for durability. Any speaker should have good impact resistance, but you probably won’t be lifting them up too much, so this is not really what is meant here.

You need a speaker with high quality interior components that aren’t going to get damaged from playing really loud music. You want to take a closer look at the wiring, the woofers, and the tweeters.

Frequency Response

Speaking of woofers and tweeters, the quality of these will determine the frequency response of the speaker in question. A wider frequency response range means better sound.

The lower a speaker can go, the better the bass is going to sound, and the higher the frequency a speaker can handle, the crisper the highs will be. You need high quality woofers for a responsive and low bass sound, as well as high quality tweeters for crisp highs.

Wiring

We already talked about the durability of the electrical components, such as the wiring, but this is not what is meant here.

Do you want speakers that you need to connect with wires, or would you rather go for a more versatile wireless option? Keep in mind that wireless speakers usually have worse sound quality than wired speakers.

Impedance

The other important factor is speaker impedance. Impedance is a measure of how well a speaker can resist currents. Impedance is measured in ohms, such as 4, 6, or 8 ohms. The higher the ohms are, the higher the impedance, the less it will tax your amp or receiver. Therefore, generally speaker, higher impedance is better.

F.A.Q.s

What is a floor-standing speaker?

A floor standing speaker is a free standing speaker that sits on the ground, as opposed to a shelf or cabinet.

What is the importance of a floor standing speaker as part of a home theater?

There are a variety of reasons for this, including that floor standing speakers tend to have the best sound quality, they have better dynamics, and they are usually easy to drive. Moreover, having bass-heavy speakers on the ground will allow you to really feel that booming bass.

Wireless vs. wired floor standing tower speakers

Wireless speakers are great for convenience. They are portable and versatile. However, there are sometimes problems with wired connections, plus wired speakers usually always outperform the wireless variety.

Are tower speakers easy to install?

Yes, because they are floor standing speakers, you simply place them on the floor wherever you want them. They don’t need to be mounted anywhere, and connecting them is usually as easy as hooking them up to a basic amp or receiver.

Do I need a powered subwoofer for my new set of floor standing speakers?

This depends on the specific speakers you get. Powered speakers will not need an amp or receiver. However, speakers that are not powered will need an amp or receiver. That said, all of the speakers we looked at today all come with built in subwoofers.

FINAL VERDICT

Remember to pay attention to the size, impedance, frequency response, wattage, volume, and the overall build quality of the floor standing speakers you plan on getting. If you keep all of these factors in mind, you should have no problem finding the best floor standing speakers for your needs.
